Frequently asked questions
What is an earnings calendar?
A schedule of when public companies release their quarterly financial reports: revenue, profit and earnings per share (EPS). Next to the date there is usually the analysts’ EPS forecast (the consensus) and, after the release, the actual figure; the gap between them is the “surprise”.
What do “before the open” (BMO) and “after the close” (AMC) mean?
Most US companies publish either before the main exchange session opens — BMO, before market open, before 9:30 New York time (ET) — or after it closes — AMC, after market close, after 16:00 ET. That decides when the share price gets to react. Next to ET the page shows the same boundary in your own time zone. “Not announced” means the source gave no time, and we do not make one up.
How is the price reaction to a report measured?
As the price change over the 48 hours from the release: from 07:00 New York time for pre-market reports and from 16:30 for after-close ones. The price comes from hourly candles of the Binance perpetual contract on that stock: it trades around the clock, so the reaction is visible even at night, when the US exchange is closed.
Does a stock rise when the company beats the forecast?
Not necessarily: the price already contains expectations, and the market reacts to guidance for the next quarter as much as to the quarter itself. In our measurements the price moved the way of the surprise — up after a beat, down after a miss — in 46% of 130 cases: the direction is close to a coin flip, while the size of the move is more predictable.
Where can I see a forecast of the move for the next report?
In the Sufics dashboard: every upcoming report has an expected move size based on the history of the ticker or its sector, with the sample size, plus a check of how accurate this page’s past forecasts were.
The Sufics dashboard has the calendar 120 days ahead and half a year of history: an expected move for every report, the reaction over 6, 24, 48 and 72 hours and the peak move. Full access opens after you sign up and we have a short talk.
