Frequently asked questions
What is the Fear & Greed Index?
A number from 0 to 100 that shows crypto market sentiment once a day: 0 is extreme fear, 100 is extreme greed. It is calculated by alternative.me from several inputs, and Sufics shows its value and history. The index covers cryptocurrencies; stocks have a separate index that is not shown here.
How do I read the value?
The scale has five zones: 0–24 extreme fear, 25–49 fear, 50–54 neutral, 55–74 greed, 75–100 extreme greed. The change matters more than the number: a sharp move over a week says more about sentiment than one day’s value.
What is the index made of?
According to the source, it is a weighted sum of several inputs: bitcoin volatility and drawdowns (about 25%), market momentum and volume (about 25%), social media sentiment (about 15%), surveys (about 15%), bitcoin dominance (about 10%) and search trends (about 10%). The exact weights and inputs are set by the source and may change.
Is the index a buy or sell signal?
No. It measures sentiment; it is neither a forecast nor a recommendation. Extreme fear or extreme greed can last for weeks while the market moves either way, so the index alone is not a reason to trade.
How often is the index updated, and where else is it on Sufics?
The value updates once a day at 00:00 UTC, and this page picks it up hourly. In the Sufics cabinet the index sits on the home board next to liquidations, momentum and funding.
